IN-SCHOOL/COLLEGE ADDICTION AWARENESS WORKSHOP

This Workshop will be led by two facilitators who have themselves been addicted to drugs and alcohol but have now beat the addiction and spend their time educating both teachers and students.

Workshop Outline Programme

The workshop is suitable for both students and teachers.  The first half of the day shown below would be presented to both students and teachers however the second half of the day would differ dependant upon our audience.  We have outlined a Teacher and a Student programme for your information.  Please note that although the programme below is for a full day running between 10am and 3.30pm approx we are able to tailor this to suit a half day should you wish.

Registration

Warm up – This session will last for approximately 15 minutes and involve students/teachers working in pairs.  Then each person would introduce themselves to the group and maybe share something about themselves (no confidential disclosures – just a funny fact or characteristic!).  This session helps to break the ice and for everybody to interact in a more relaxed environment.

Quiz – This session is to find out how much students/teachers already know about addiction and substance abuse.

Break

Drug Identification – Students/teachers will be split into two groups.  Imitation drugs will be passed around from our Drugs Box.

Group 1           Hallucinogenic – LCD – Cannabis – Heroin –

Group 2           Alcohol – Nicotine- Legal Drugs

Each group will look at the substances in a non-judgemental manner and then they will be asked to present their effect to the others.  This session can prove to be a powerful group activity.

Lunch Break

Afternoon Teacher Sessions

Spot the User!!! (Recreational/Legal or other) – During this session we would work with the Teachers on how to spot drug use and how to respond when faced with long/short term usage.  This session would involve Role Play.

Break

Shared Experiences – We rarely talk to one another regarding these issues and can really benefit from telling each other that we really don’t know what to do!  It is often the most valuable part of the day for you as often pride keeps us from admitting to each other that we have little experience in these matters.

Process of Change – A powerful exercise regarding change which can be applied to student’s lives and your own. A fun session.

Afternoon Student Sessions

Impact/PIES – This session looks at in depth the role that alcohol/drugs plays in our lives.  We will briefly touch on the historical aspects of mood changing substances and their role in history.  Students will be divided into different groups where they will explore the PIES model - Physical/Intellectual/Emotional/Social.  Students will explore both the negative and positives.  We have found that by this part of the day students feel absolutely safe to challenge and we make sure that anyone’s opinion is heard.

Process of Change – This session will be geared to the students and changes in their lives.  A really positive way to end the day with them.
